DC-10 air tanker

A DC-10 air tanker drops retardant on the wildfire burning near Albion on Saturday.

Two lightning-caused wildfires have scorched over 2,000 acres in southeast Idaho, authorities said.

One of the fires has burned 1,000 acres about seven miles northeast of Albion while the other blaze has scorched 1,200 acres in the Raft River area.

The wildfires were both reported on Saturday afternoon following thunderstorms and have not resulted in any damage to structures, injuries, evacuations or road closures, authorities said.

The fire burning northeast of Albion is expected to be contained by around 10 p.m. Sunday and will hopefully be controlled by 10 p.m. Tuesday, authorities said.

No structures are currently threatened by the flames but there are structures in the area.

The Snake River Hotshots elite firefighting team is fighting this wildfire with help from several local fire departments and Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service firefighters.

On Saturday afternoon several firefighting aircraft including a massive DC-10 air tanker dropped retardant on the wildfire to help firefighters on the ground try to halt its spread.

The fire is currently burning in terrain that includes grass, brush and juniper trees.

The wildfire burning between Lake Walcott and Interstate 86 in the Raft River area is the bigger of the two but authorities said they expect to have it contained on Sunday afternoon and to have it controlled on Sunday evening.

Local fire departments and BLM firefighters are battling the wildfire, which is not currently threatening any structures. The blaze is currently burning in grass and brush.

Firefighters are bracing for the possibility of thunderstorms and high winds in both fire areas on Sunday. Additional firefighting resources are ready to be deployed against both blazes if needed, authorities said.
